Kailash Trip Overview

Ravel Roads crew will receive pilgrimage with you to the holy land of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar for sixteen days, starting from Beijing.

The tour starts off with exploring and making our way to Holy Mount Kailash. We explore the Holy Mount Kailash and the sacred surroundings. Some major sites we visit during this tour are Mount Kailash, Lake Mansarovar, Rakshasa Taal, Milarepa Caves, and more.

This spiritual journey promises a transformative experience amid ancient traditions and breathtaking landscapes.

Day 01: Beijing Arrival

 

We will receive you at the airport/ train station upon your arrival in Beijing, and drive you to the hotel. Overnight at the Beijing hotel.

Day 02: Beijing Sightseeing

 

Today we will visit to the Great Wall of China, and visit some of the must visit places in Beijing (Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City , Temple of Heaven). After completing our sightseeing, we will return back to our hotel and overnight.

Day 03: Beijing to Lhasa

 

We will drive to Beijing Airport and take a flight to Lhasa. We will receive you at the airport upon your arrival in Tibet and drive you to the hotel. The rest of today, go slowly so that you can acclimate to the altitude more quickly. For the lengthy trip ahead, keep in mind to drink lots of water and get plenty of rest.

Day 04: Lhasa Sightseeing

 

Morning breakfast at the hotel, and we will visit the capital city of Tibet, Potala Palace. We will visit the Potala Palace, approx. 3 hours in the old Palace Residence in the heart of the city. We will then head onwards to Barkhor Street, then visit the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. Explore around the place, and back to the hotel. Overnight stay in Lhasa.

Day 05-Lhasa sightseeing

 

You will explore the Jokhang, the holiest Buddhist temple in the Himalaya’s. Founded nearly 1400 years ago, Jokhang Temple houses the most sacred statue of Buddha. You will work your way through this fascinating temple alongside Buddhist pilgrims from the faraway regions of Tibet. The sound of pilgrims chanting mantras fills the air as does the smell of yak butter candle offerings. In the afternoon, you will go to the 600-year-old Sera, one of Tibet’s largest Buddhist monasteries. Each weekday afternoon starting at 3pm, monks engage in Buddhist philosophy debates, which are fun to photograph.

Day 06: Drive Lhasa to Shigatse – via Gyantse

 

Our route passes via Gyatse to Shigatse, the capital of the Tsang region, home to the Panchen Lama, the second pope in Tibet. Excursion to the Tashilhunpo monastery (founded in 1447) early in the morning, stopping at the temple of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, as well as other monastic temples. We will stop over at the Yamdrok Lake for a nice view of the gigantic freshwater lake. Hotel overnight stay.

Day 07: Drive from Shigatse to Saga

 

Wake up early, have some breakfast, and then start your drive towards Saga. Saga is considered to be the entry point for Kailash Mansarovar region and is an important point for trade between three majour towns of Tibet viz Lhasa, Gyirong and Prayang. We will serve packed lunch in the midway. By late afternoon, you will have crossed the Brahmaputra River and be at the characteristic Tibetan and Chinese town of Saga for the evening. Finally, reach Saga and stay overnight at Hotel Saga or equivalent.

Day 08: Saga to Mansarovar via Paryang

 

After our breakfast at Saga, we will be driving to the highest freshwater lake in the world, the holy Mansarovar Lake, lying at an altitude of 4558 meters, stretching wide with a pristine greenish-blue color. The holy lake is believed to be the resting place of Lord Bishnu. It is surrounded by Mt. Kailash, Mt. Gurula-Mandata, and Lake Rakshasha (Rakshash Taal). The Rakshash Taal is believed to be created by the Evil King Ravan, and the locals believe the water is poisonous. Overnight at Hotel around Lake Mansarovar.

Day 09: Mansarovar – drive to Darchen

 

We will get into our spiritual selves and perform some rituals (puja) at the bank of the holy lake mansarovar. Our staff will provide a bucket of hot holy water for each yatri from lake Mansarovar for bathing. After our puja and prayers, we will complete the Parikrama of the Mansarovar Lake on Bus, and continue to the base camp of Kailash, Darchen. It is a village town right in front of the sacred Mt. Kailash. Overnight at a hotel.

Option: Drive from Darchen to Selung Monastery & Ashtapad a high-altitude meditation retreat located on the inner circuit of the Mount Kailash Kora in Tibet, China. We can drive by Jeep. Situated at approximately (5,020) meters. We can view Ashtapad South Face of Kailash and Nandi and return to Darchen. Overnight at Hotel.

Distance: 110km – 2 hours (Mansarovar Parikrama) 40km – 1 hour (Mansarovar to Darchen)

Day 10: Darchen - Yamadwar - Drirapuk (Kora starts)

 

We will embark on a three – day parikrama. We first drive to the small settlement of Tarboche, also called Darboche. It is the starting point of the Kailash Kora and is also known as the Valley of Gods. Yamadwar, the gatewat of the God of Death, is located here in Tarboche. We will walk for a few hours to arrive at the settlement of Derapuk, settling right in front of the North Face of Mt. Kailash. Overnight and rest at a guest house.

Distance: 7km – 0.5 hours (Darchen to Tarboche Valley) 14km – 8hours (Yamodhar to Drirapuk)

Day 11: Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk (Drolma La Pass)

 

Among the three days of Kora, today is the longest and the most difficult day. We will be heading towards the village of Jarok Donkhang first, and hike towards the Shiva-stal. We will rest for some time and take a steep downhill and get to the banks of Lham-chu Khir river. We catch sight of the Holy Pond of ‘Gaurikunda’. We reach the village of Juthulpuk, this place is named after. The famous cave of Zuthulpuk, Zuthulpuk cave, also known as ‘the miracle cave’. We will also catch sight of the Buddha’s Footprints along the way. Overnight at a guest house.

Distance: 22km – 10/12 hours (Dirapuk to Juthulpuk)

Day 12: Zuthulpuk to Jhong (Kora Ends) to Saga

 

We will spend the morning touring the nearby Milarepa cave's caves and temples. After breakfast, we will climb for three to four hours around 7-km to finish our Kora and return to the Darchen settlement. We'll eat there for lunch before heading back to Saga. Hotel overnight stay.

Day 13: Saga to Kerung and Ghattekhola to Kathmandu by Road / Helicopter

 

We will take a nice ride on paved Tibetan roads back to the settlement of Kerung, which is at the border between Nepal and Tibet. Cross the border and drive back to Kathmandu

Day 14: Kathmandu Sightseeing

 

Start your day with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here, you can observe the temple’s unique architecture, and the rituals performed by Hindu devotees and also, we will visit Guheshwori Shaktipeetham. Afterwards visit Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in Nepal, where you can witness Tibetan monks and pilgrims circumambulating the stupa and spinning prayer wheels. We will then visit Jalnarayan where you can witness the statue of sleeping Bishnu. Next, head to Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore ancient palaces, courtyards, and temples that showcase the rich history and culture of Nepal. From there, proceed to Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, for breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley. In the evening, visit the Kumari Temple and Hanuman Dhoka, adding to your understanding of Kathmandu's cultural heritage. Overnight at Kathmandu.
